Local governments gorging themselves on Taxpayers wallets
This storyin the Odessa American details a myriad of new places for the city of Odessa to waste your money. For instance this gem:
The draft budget does include a new position at the City Hall: a multimedia marketing specialist with a salary of more than $60,000 who would work under City of Odessa spokeswoman Andrea Goodson to promote positive stories about the city.
Yes, the “spokeswoman” doesn’t have time to peddle positive stories about the city. I would like someone to explain to me if I don’t hear daily or weekly positive stories about the City of Odessa how will my life be different? Do I have the ability to change my service to another City, like I can change my cable company? Isn’t this really a collective incumbent protection plan? Isn’t this a propaganda machine to make you believe that city council & mayor are making ALL the right decisions for your life & your city? They seem to believe that if they overwhelm the airways, print & social media with feel good stories about spending an ever increasing amount of your money that you will gladly embrace your financial bondage in the name of “quality of life”.
Next they seem to be implying all of this extra revenue is necessary to spruce up the parks system. Yet recall December 2013 the OA had a story detailing $13.4 million of BORROWED money infused into the Parks Dept. It’s beginning to look more like the city manager is parking money in every department to later use at his own discretion.
Police are always a handy cover for tax increases. However, if it means real “investment” then maybe not so much. Take this from the most recent OA article that we began with:
In total, the Odessa Police Department — the city’s largest — would see an increase by nearly $1.8 million to a total of about $25.8 million under the draft budget proposal. A request for more than $500,000 in bomb-squad equipment was denied.
yet we do have the money for this request: A few line-items would support that role: a $900 green screen, a $564 boom microphone and a $900 quad-copter that could capture aerial images. PLAY TOYS! We have money for a drone!
Next Tuesday August 12, 2014 – 6:00 PM, you taxpayers in Odessa have to show up & make your voice heard. Otherwise, these people will believe you are giving them permission to tax you into poverty.
